Follow the Iter Vitis Route of Dionyso in Thraces
For those who studied Greek in school or delved into classical studies, certain names of heroes, poets, writers, and toponyms, resonate like mythical echoes from the past. These names may have caused us to struggle over grammar or translation, but they also sparked dreams of lands filled with history and legend. Drama, a city steeped in mythology and culture, has a unique way of breathing life back into those storied names, transforming them from lines in a textbook into living, vibrant destinations.
Drama, and its surrounding region, is a place where cultural heritage converges with natural beauty, offering a tourism experience of incomparable value. Here, history is not just told—it is felt, tasted, and savored. This cultural richness extends even to the region’s wines, which are no longer simply beverages but are imbued with the legacy of Thrace, Philip of Macedon, and the Dionysian festivals. Drama reminds us whether we are hesitant policymakers or cautious health enthusiasts that wine is not merely an alcoholic drink; it is a cultural artifact, a bridge between past and present.
Dramas region provides ample evidence for this. Historically, it is a treasure trove, with archaeological sites such as the ancient settlement of Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was the city founded by Philip II of Macedon, linking Drama to the very roots of European history. The region is also home to stunning Byzantine monuments and Ottoman-era landmarks that speak to its diverse cultural influences.
Nature enthusiasts will also find Drama breathtaking. The Angitis River Cave, a remarkable karstic phenomenon, invites exploration. The Rhodope Mountains and Nestos River gorge provide a backdrop of untamed beauty, offering hiking, birdwatching, and a profound sense of connection to nature. The regions combination of historical and natural allure makes it a perfect candidate for cultural tourism development.
Iter Vitis is proud to announce that the Chamber of Commerce of Drama has joined our network as a new member, marking an important milestone. On January 25, during the National Meeting of Greek Chambers of Commerce hosted in Drama, this new partnership was formalized. This collaboration is not just an honor but also an opportunity to highlight Dramas incredible potential as a wine tourism destination.
We are already working on an exciting project: the Wine Route of Dionysus in Thrace. This initiative will celebrate the cultural and historical legacy of Dramas wines, placing them firmly within the larger narrative of Thraces vinous heritage. Over the coming months, we will develop this route, blending history, mythology, and the unparalleled landscapes of Drama into a tourism product of exceptional value.
Stay tuned as we unveil the evolution of this remarkable journey. Drama is calling and we are ready to answer. Lets raise a glass to Thrace, to Dionysus, and to the future of cultural wine tourism in this extraordinary region.
Welcome to Iter Vitis, Drama Chamber of Commerce!
