Cacabelos, expanses of vineyards along the Camino de Santiago

This charming Spanish town in the province of León is one of the stages of the Spanish section of the Cultural Route of Santiago de Compostela. Arriving at Cacabelos, the first thing you can see is the hermit of San Roque; then the church of Santa María, S. XIII-XVI, with a wooden sculpture of the Madonna of the XIII century. The XVIII-century neoclassic Santuario della Quinta Angustia (Santuario della Quinta Angoscia) also stands out with the Albergo dei Pellegrini. "The wine of Cacabelos makes the elderly dance", an ancient proverbantecedent the XVIcentury says, referring to the party character of the city, but above all to a secular culture of wine. The landscape, thanks also to the favorable pedoclimatic conditions, is covered by large expanses of vineyards, which give life to very appreciated wines, produced with the red Mancia and Grenache, and the white Doña Blanca, Godello and Malvasia. In April every year the denomination of origin Bierzo is celebrated with a big party.
